Hyaluronic acid is naturally present in many tissues and fluids of our body. It allows, for example, the sliding of bone surfaces between them. However, the skin is the element of the human body that contains the most hyaluronic acid. With collagen, it is indeed what allows the dermis to keep its structure, to remain firm and well hydrated.

Many C27 cosmeceuticals are composed of hyaluronic acid. However, this molecule has different functions in each of our products.

What is hyaluronic acid?

A natural component of the skin, hyaluronic acid was discovered in the early 1930s by the biochemist Karl Meyer. Hyaluronic acid was first used in ophthalmic surgery and then, since the 1990s, in aesthetic medicine.

Hyaluronic acid is found in the intercellular space of the epidermis and is used to reconstitute the structures of the skin and regulate hydration. As we age, the body produces less hyaluronic acid. Thus, it is considered that the skin contains only half of its initial hyaluronic acid at the age of 50. Without enough hyaluronic acid, the skin is less supple and firm, the features start to deepen and the first wrinkles form.

Industrially produced hyaluronic acid takes many forms: injections, dietary supplements and of course creams.

At Cosmetics 27, the molecule is present in our care products in the form of Sodium Hyaluronate, Disodium Acetyl Glucosamine Phosphate and hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid.

What are its properties on the skin?

 Hyaluronic acid has three functions for the skin: it participates in the synthesis of collagen, it maintains hydration and protects the dermis from external aggressions.

To maintain a beautiful and supple skin, it is important to provide the skin with a sufficient quantity of hyaluronic acid.

The action of hyaluronic acid varies according to its molecular weight and the way the molecule is split. In cosmetics, hyaluronic acid can therefore be used as a maintenance agent, as well as a humectant, conditioner and moisturizer.

The molecule, known to significantly improve skin hydration, forms a dense viscoelastic network with water that helps the dermis maintain its density and elasticity. Hyaluronic acid also stimulates skin regeneration and tones the skin tissue.

What is vitamin C?

Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin that belongs to the chemical category of ascorbic acid.

Unlike other mammals, humans are unable to synthesize vitamin C: it is therefore our diet that allows us to provide our body with the vitamin C it needs on a daily basis. Without vitamin C, we would develop the typical disease of sailors: scurvy. Many people take vitamin C cures in order to keep their energy and reduce the feelings of fatigue that can be felt in the middle of winter.

Vitamin C is involved in the production of collagen, which forms the connective tissue of the skin, bones and ligaments. This vitamin also supports our immune system, it participates in the good healing of wounds and helps our body to assimilate the iron that we consume. 

What are the properties of vitamin C on the skin?

In cosmetics, vitamin C is an essential active ingredient, known in particular for its antioxidant power, but also for its lightening action. Vitamin C also stimulates the synthesis of collagen, responsible for the elasticity and firmness of the epidermis. 

Thanks to its antioxidant action, vitamin C neutralizes the free radicals that cause premature aging of the skin. Also known as Tiger grass, Centella Asiatica is an ancient plant of the Apiaceae family, it is native to Oceania and Asia.

Centella Asiatica is an exceptional plant in many ways: it is used in cosmetics and Ayurvedic medicine. It is also a key ingredient in C27 cosmeceuticals.

What is Centella Asiatica?

In Asia, Centella Asiatica is particularly popular: it is called Gotu Hoka, Brahmi, Hydrocotyle, Pegaga, frog grass or water bowl. This plant, which grows mainly in swampy areas, can be extracted to create salves, creams, ointments as well as essential oils and infusions. 

For thousands of years, Centella Asiatica has been recognized for its numerous virtues, both for the skin and the nervous system. It is also a plant widely used in Ayurvedic medicine. The active ingredients of Centella Asiatica have been used in Asian pharmacopoeia for nearly 5,000 years: traces of the tiger herb can be found in the writings of the very first pharmacist of traditional Chinese medicine.

 The Centella Asiatica is also called "plant of longevity": the legend tells indeed that Li-Ching-Yun consumed every day the plant in salad and in infusion, he would have lived nearly 200 years.

In the 17th century, the beneficial effects of Centella Asiatica spread beyond Asia to the West. The Carthusian monks then used it to develop what will be called "the Elixir of long life".
